"War is Not Always Hell"

Here is a December 1968 photo of 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry Chaplain Breland Sharing Christmas Dinner with children from the Bac Ha Catholic Orphanage, Republic of South Vietnam. My parents and friends with Rim of the World REACT in Lake Arrowhead, California, sent many boxes of clothing and toys for the children's Christmas party. Although I was in combat north of Cu Chi at the time, my heart was with these kids. They were why I was there.  This treasured picture was a gift to me from Chaplain Breland.

The 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry supported a Vietnamese orphanage in the village of Bac Ha near Cu Chi. The orphanage housed 100 war orphans age 4 to 6.  The 25th Infantry Division band played carols and Santa arrived by a helicopter at the Christmas party held for the orphans in the 3/4 Cavalry Enlisted Club. Each orphan received a gift. Troopers donated money for the gifts and family members back home collected wrapped and shipped the presents.
