Personal Experience Narratives (War Stories)

"The Wood Line"
Written for Memorial Day 2014
by Warren Yeagley

Things are tense as we pull off the road,
as we head toward the woodline we lock and load.

Then someone spots something that doesn't look right,
we're now in the mist of a long fire fight.

In the mist of the battle you don't ask why,
you only pray that you will not die.

Hoping your training's been good enough,
and praying you've learned all the right stuff.

Knowing your buddy has got your back,
just trying to get through another attack.

Soon the artillery shells start to fall,
but it seems like they're not helping at all.

Then the gunships appear on the scene,
with their shark like teeth they really look mean.

With their guns a blazing their rockets they fire,
But the battle goes on and we're starting to tire.

We look up and see jets, they're in attack mode,
they swoop down and drop, their entire load.

As the napalm hits the black smoke's arising,
then we see them head off into the horizon.

We continue to fire as we fight our way through,
the smoke has now cleared and the sky's again blue.

Then we break through the wood line and into the open,
we all made it through is what we were hoping.

But we lost a few men on that terrible day,
with their very lives, the price they did pay.

As we think of what this day is for,
Think of the men who have died in war.
