July 2 - Troop establishes NDPs on MSR. 1st platoon near villiage outside of Trang Bang. - Mission to provide security for night resupply convoy from Tay Ninh to Cu Chi. July 3 - At 0130 hrs convoy and C Troop escort are ambushed 4 miles south of Go Da Ha. - Troop sent as reaction force. - 1st platoon is in the lead for the Troop. 3rd vehicle A19 hits mine, burns, & is a combat loss. (photo) - Troop halts temporarily, bypasses minefield, and moves up road to reach C Troop and convoy. July 9 (see 2nd Bde Combat Summary July/Aug 68) - A Troop position at XT625125. - A Troop & C Troop sweeps highway and outposts from XT387251 to the Hoc Mon Bridge. July 10 - 2345 hrs A Troop receives small arms fire from unknown number of VC at XT533182. Returned fire with small arms. No casualties. July 11 - A troop maintains night laager at XT623128. - A troop moves to XT653145 to extablish new night laager location. - 0005 hrs A troop receives small arms and rpg fire from unknown size force at XT676145. Two A troop WIA. Returned fire with small arms and automatic weapons. July 12 - A Troop night laager located at XT653145. July 13 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT588253 to XT523180. July 14 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. July 15 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. July 16 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. - 1945 hrs A troop receives 2 rounds sniper fire at XT558171. No casualties and did not return fire. July 17 - A Co 1/5 INF(M) and B Co 2/22 INF(M) OPCON to 3/4 Cav. - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. July 18 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. July 19 - A troop night laager at XT544177. - Sweep assigned sector of MSR. After sweep conduct operation with 1 PLT of RF from 25th ARVN Div at XT553172. - Conduct combined ambush patrols with elements of 25th ARVN Div. - 1645 hrs received sniper fire wounding one trooper at XT573163. Returned fire with organic weapons with unknown results. July 20 - A Co 1/5 INF(M) released from OPCON to 3/4 Cav. - Sweep of MSR from XT523158 to XT593147. Outpost one platoon in assigned sector. - After sweep conduct operation with 1 PLT of RF from 25th ARVN Div at XT502193. - 2105 hrs troop engaged 5 VC at XT503195. Results not known. July 21 - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. Outpost one platoon on MSR on completion of sweep. July 22 - C Co 2/27 INF OPCON to 3/4 Cav. - A Troop sweeps and outposts road from XT523188 to XT593147. - 1645 A troop received 3 rounds of AK fire. Negative damage & negative results. - 1900 hrs 187th Bn 101st AB Div OPCON to 3/4 Cav. July 23 - Troop sweep of MSR from XT523158 to XT593147. Outpost one platoon in assigned sector. - 0900 hrs 1 WIA from head wound (frag) at XT552171. - Troop conduct combined ambush patrols with elements of 25th ARVN Div at XT533186. - 2245 hrs A Troop engaged 50 VC with 50 cal mg fire and arty at XT569176. Results not known. July 24 - Troop sweeps and clears MSR from XT593146 to XT713071. Post one platoon after completion of sweep. - 1950 hrs A Troop reports one non-battle injury from stomach cramps. July 25 - Troop sweeps and clears MSR from XT588149 to Hoc Mon Bridge. Post one platoon after completion of sweep. July 26 - A Troop returns to base camp for standdown. Ready Reaction Force for division. Prepares for night convoy escort operations. July 27 - A Troop in base camp for standdown. Conduct training, maintenance, & Ready Reaction Force for division. July 28 - A Troop in base camp for standdown. Conduct training, maintenance, & Ready Reaction Force for DISCOM ambush patrol and Phu Cong Bridge. July 29 - A troop sends one platoon OPCON to B Co 3/22 INF for security of Phu Cong Bridge at XT805135. - One platoon with RF elements provides security for the BEP Bridge at XT781132. - Troop (-) establishs night strong point at XT624127. One platoon sweeps northwest to XT563167 and one platoon sweeps southeast to XT723057. - Troop conduct combined ambush patrols with elements of 25th ARVN Div at XT651122 & XT614138. - 0600 hrs troop sweeps and clears MSR from XT563167 to XT724056. Outpost two platoons after completion of sweep. Troop (-) returns to base camp and prepares for night operations. July 30 - A Troop returns to base camp. Ready Reaction Force for division. Prepares for night operations. July 31 - 1800 hrs A Troop (-) establishs strong point at vic XT520189. - A Troop conducts ambush patrol with one platoon RF of 25th ARVN Div at XT532175. - One platoon establish strong point vic XT544178. - Troop employs sniper team vic ST528185. - Troop provides DISCOM with a 10 man ambush patrol. Early Aug - 16,000 soldiers of the VC/NVA 5th & 9th Divisions infiltrate into War Zone C preparing to attack Tay Ninh. (See 3rd Bde 101Abn Intel Summary) Aug 1 Summary: - 0600 hrs sweep road from XT563167 to Go Da Hau. Outpost road with 2 platoons. One platoon OPCON to B/3/22 INF for security of the Phu Cuong and Ba Bep Bridges. Conducts night offensive operations by establish a Team (-) strong point at XT675100. Conduct combined ambush patrol with RF elements of 25th ARVN Div at XT674095. 0500 hrs conduct sweep and clearing operation in sector 1 north and south with 2 platoons. 1500 hrs outpost sector I with 2 platoons. Resupply convoy to use alternate MSR. Troop ordered to outpost alternate MSR and then move to Tay Ninh to reenforce Tay Ninh Base Camp. At 0937 hrs 2nd platoon and Trp HQ are ambushed on Hwy 26 in the Little Rubber by 2 battalions of the 275th VC/NVA Regiment. Lead tank hits mine and Trp Hq elements under heaviest fire. Ambush is about 1 mile long. NVA in fallen trees from Rome Plow operations. 3d platoon leaves outposts to assist Trp Hq elements. 3d platoon place fires on enemy positions to the north of road. A number of vehicles have fired basic loads of ammo and are using small arms. 3d platoon secures the wounded pulls back to regroup and calls in medivac. 1st platoon is last platoon moving towards ambush.
